Literacy and Numeracy Adviser
- Full time, 7-month contract - ideally, commencing 1 March 2020
- Based in Suva, Fiji with possible travel to Districts
The Fiji Program Support Facility (the Facility) was established in 2017 to support and implement Australia’s aid programs in sectors including health, education, Australia Awards and governance in Fiji. The Facility also supports the Australia Awards and Education programs in Tuvalu. The Facility integrates cross-cutting themes, including gender equality, disability inclusion, climate change, emergency preparedness and response and civil society engagement, across sectoral programs. The Facility seeks to strengthen program outcomes by better addressing the needs of targeted beneficiaries including those who are often marginalised.
The Literacy and Numeracy Adviser will develop a Literacy and Numeracy (L&N) Implementation Strategy to guide the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of L&N skills in schools and teacher training. The role will assist the Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts (MEHA) to achieve improved student L&N outcomes in the early years by reviewing and updating the current Literacy and Numeracy Teacher Guides for Lower Primary (Years 1-4) and provide advice on the training of teachers and school leaders to effectively use these guides.
To support in-service teacher development and preservice teacher preparation and ensure a common standard of professional development at the sector level, the role will also assess the need for and then design and develop the Years 5-6 Literacy and Numeracy Teachers Guides for use by pre-service and in-service teachers and provide professional advice on the training of teachers and school leaders to effectively use these guides.
The ideal candidate will have a high-level level tertiary qualification in Education, however, a post graduate qualification in literacy and numeracy is essential. Combined with your experience in managing and implementing major curriculum development initiatives, your technical expertise in driving improvements in literacy and in numeracy within an education environment and your experience designing training packages for teachers, you will also demonstrate a high-quality writing style and a practical ability in training and coaching teachers and school heads in language and literacy and numeracy
Importantly, you will display knowledge of best development practice in school level curriculum issues in developing countries, including specialist technical areas of literacy and of numeracy. Furthermore, you will demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, high level negotiation skills and the ability to think clearly and logically. Additionally, the ability to quickly build and maintain strong relationships with people from varying backgrounds and levels is essential.
