 The Program

Australia Awards in Papua New Guinea is designed to promote knowledge, leadership and enduring ties between Australia and PNG. It aims to build knowledge and skills to address PNG’s economic and development challenges through international scholarships to Australia and scholarships in PNG. It also seeks to foster people-to-people links between Australia and PNG.

The program offers the next generation of leaders in Papua New Guinea opportunities to acquire professional and technical knowledge and skills relevant to the priorities of the Government of PNG. It ensures that study opportunities are provided for women, people with disabilities and people from remote locations. There is a focus on supporting alumni to use their skills, knowledge and networks to drive change and innovation.

AAPNG includes three types of study options:

  • Australia Award scholarships for Papua New Guineans to study primarily postgraduate courses in Australia;
  • In-PNG scholarships for Papua New Guineans to study in PNG to meet critical workforce gaps and to contribute to strengthening local education institutions; and
  • Australia Awards Short Course Awards for Papua New Guineans to undertake short term professional development study in Australia (referred to as Fellowships in PNG).

To deliver Australia Awards outcomes, the Facility has five streams: Australia Awards Scholarships; PNG and Pacific Awards; Short Course Awards; Alumni Engagement; and Secondary Education. Australia Awards in PNG is managed by Coffey, a Tetra Tech company, on behalf of the Australian Government.  

The Position

The Educational Assessments Specialist will undertake a review of the current approach and tools used for assessment and selection of awardees for the three scholarship modalities offered by Australia Awards in Papua New Guinea, including Australia Awards Scholarships for long-term study in PNG, In-PNG Scholarships and Short Course Awards for study in Australia. This review will include recommendations for improvement in line with the program’s priorities and intended outcomes.

The Person

The ideal candidate will have tertiary qualification(s) in education, educational leadership, human resource development, or related field. We are seeking a specialist with at least ten years’ professional experience in providing advice and designing initiatives regarding education and human resource development assessment, applying global principles and standards and the latest best practice.

To be successful in this role, you will have demonstrated solid understanding of the Australian higher education sector, including student recruitment and admissions, and/or scholarship management. You will have extensive knowledge of current assessment practices and evaluation tools, including statistical measures, for continuing education activities.

Familiarity and experience with DFAT-funded programs, particularly scholarships is an advantage. Demonstrated capacity to interact with various stakeholders and in a complex cross-cultural environment is also required.
