Sri Lanka’s REDD+ Potential: Myth or Reality?

This report provides background information and assesses the scope and potential for forest carbon related activities in Sri Lanka. The report assesses Sri Lanka's potential for REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, Conservation and Enhancement of Forest Carbon Stocks, and Sustainable Management of Forest) activities and concludes that the scope and opportunities for REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) depend on whether Sri Lanka has a continued high deforestation and/or forest degradation rate with substantial loss of carbon stocks. This is currently unclear. If national forest cover and condition is found to be relatively stable, room for REDD is reduced the country may still be able to benefit from the plus activities – conservation, sustainable management and enhancement.
