Mega-events and human rights violations in Brazil

The 2014 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by 12 Brazilian cities and the 2016 Summer Olympics will take place in the city of Rio de Janeiro. This report from the National Coalition of Local Committees for a People’s World Cup and Olympics looks at the the lesser-known side of these mega-events, highlighting the situation of 170,000 people whose right to housing is either being violated or threatened.

The report aims to draw the attention of government authorities, Brazil’s civil society, and human rights organisations in Brazil and abroad to the real legacy that these events will leave behind: destruction of low-income communities and neighborhoods, the deepening of urban inequalities, environmental degradation, and misery for many with benefits for the few.
